Articles. A/an/the/zero article

Articles... These words seem odd to us. There is nothing surprising about it – we do not have them in our native language.
We can clearly understand what thing or person we are talking about just by the context of a situation. But it would be a huge mistake to think that articles are worthless and do not deserve our time to learn them. Subtle differences and important details can be misunderstood or even worse – completely missed if you don’t know how to use and understand them. So here they are, please, have a look.

1 We use a/an with countable, singular nouns:

  • when it’s the first time we mention something

It is a new feature of our phone.
We will also need to launch an advertising campaign.

  • when the thing we talk about is not a specific thing

Product is one of the main elements that create an image of a company.

  • when we say how often something happens

Our company launches a new product once a month.

2 We use the:

  • when we talk about something we mentioned before
Theadvertising campaign will have to communicate the idea of freshness.
  • when we talk about a specific thing
This measure will definitely raise people’s awareness of the company.
  • with superlatives
The bestway to increase our brand visibility is to launch an advertising campaign.

3 We use zero article with plural and uncountable nouns (when we don’t use a or the):

  • when we speak about things in general
(Zero article) Brand identity is an important part of any company.
    People like (zero article) quality.
  • before next/last + day, week, year, month
We will be ready to present our new product (zero article) next month.
