Comments on the polylogue

Ivan says to his parents:

Привет, мам, привет, пап!

Мам! and пап! – very colloquial forms of addressing your parents.

Ivan’s dad is very glad to meet Vera, so he says:

Очень рад!

Do you remember what else we can say when we meet new people?

Note that this form doesn’t change while the form рад changes according to the gender of the person who is saying it:

Иван: Очень рад!

Вера: Очень рада!

Ivan’s dad wants to offer some alcohol to Vera, the mum is terrified so she exclaims:

Ты что?!

It’s a very emotional disapproving remark.

1The Prepositional case

You already know the Nominative and the Accusative cases. Now we are going to show you the Prepositional case which is only used with the prepositions:

• в (in), на (on) — to denote the place of an action.
  

The question is Где ? (Where ?)

• о (about) — when we are talking about something or someone.
  

The questions are О ком ? (About whom ?) for the animate nouns and О чём ? (About what ?) for the inanimate nouns.

Где ты работаешь?

В ресторане.

О чём вы разговариваете?

О музыке.

О ком вы разговариваете?

О маме.
